U.S. 101 at East Bay Road

Project Completed

Region 3: Southwestern Oregon (North Bend, Coos)

This project will ease congestion and improve safety on U.S. 101 near North Bend by adding turn lanes onto East Bay Road, upgrading the traffic signals at the intersection and building sidewalk connections.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Nighttime lane closures: Most work will take place at night. Motorists can expect lane closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday night to Friday morning. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

Congestion and delays: From March until May, the U.S. 101 traffic signal at East Bay Road will operate on a timer rather than sensors. This may result in added congestion or delays at times. Some U.S. 101 drivers may receive a red light when no vehicles are waiting on East Bary Road. Likewise, there may be times not all vehicles can turn from East Bay Road onto the highway during a single cycle of the traffic signal. ODOT expects to reconnect the detection system in May, when the new traffic signal poles are installed.

Northbound right-turn lane: A new right-turn lane is now open for northbound U.S. 101 traffic turning onto East Bay Road. Traffic control is provided by a yield sign.

Local roads: Hummingbird Road, which connects to East Bay Road near the U.S. 101 intersection, will be limited to a single lane of traffic for most of the spring. East Bay Road motorists are asked to allow room for vehicles turning in and out of Hummingbird Road.

Construction noise: Residents near the project area can expect noise related to road construction.

Schedule

Construction began in January 2024 and was completed in June 2024.

About

The area of U.S. 101 north of McCullough Bridge in the North Bend area is limited to a single lane in each direction. Southbound traffic often backs up when a driver attempts to turn left onto East Bay Road, causing some motorists to pass on the right shoulder.

The traffic signal at this intersection is outdated and costly to maintain.

The pedestrian crossing at East Bay Road is not connected to the sidewalks on McCullough Bridge.

This project will ease congestion and improve safety at this intersection by installing a left-turn lane from southbound U.S. 101 onto East Bay Road. A right-turn lane for northbound traffic will also be constructed. New traffic signal poles and hardware will be installed, and a sidewalk connection will be built between McCullough Bridge and the intersection.
