Impacts

Traffic Impact

Anticipated night construction with flaggers, lane closures and reduced lanes during key project elements. Possible lane/shoulder closures during the day which may cause minor delays.

Construction Impacts

Night paving with traffic controlled by flaggers. The contractor is working on ADA ramps and have established temporary pedestrian accessible routes (TPAR).

Meetings and Events

We held an online open house earlier this year where the community was able to submit questions or concerns about the project and review information about the project.

Schedule

The project was awarded in May 2024 with construction anticipated for summer 2024 into 2025.

Details

About

This project removes the existing pavement and replaces it with new asphalt. Replace Americans with Disabilities Act ramps (88 ramps in total throughout the project area) and improve the bike and pedestrian connections leading to and through the Big X intersection.

Preventative maintenance on four structures within the project limits.

Location

Multiple |

The 'Big X' intersection radiating from OR 99 between Table Rock and Ohio Streets, Oreogn 238 west to North Ross Lane and OR 62 east to Biddle Road overpass.

Cost and Funding

$18.2 million. About $3 million in Active Transportation funds for improved sidewalks/bike lanes and multi-use path.

Contractor

The project was awarded to Knife River Materials (KRM).

Benefits

Project will extend the useful life of asphalt roadways, bridges and improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Maintains the failing asphalt and striping at this busy Medford intersection. It will also rehabilitate the existing bridge transitions, bridge decks on the Oregon 62 bridges over Interstate 5 and Biddle Road as well as the Oregon 238 over CORP railroad bridge.

What Problem Will This Improve?

Nearly all the asphalt roadways and bridges in the project area need upgrades. Area was last paved in 2000 when the Big X project was complete.
