About
This project will provide improvements to bridges on I-84 at Arlington and Rufus and on the U.S. 197 over I-84 bridge to improve safety and mobility along this section of the I-84 corridor.
These bridges are showing signs of deterioration and the bridge decks need to be replaced.

Background
This project began several years ago as three separate individual bridge projects but was subsequently combined into a single project to achieve planning and construction efficiencies.
Arlington Bridge
The Arlington Bridge scope of work consists of removing two inches of concrete off the bridge deck and replacing it with a 3-inch silica/concrete overlay that will provide a safer and smoother surface. Arlington Bridge work will also include construction of a taller median barrier, upgraded transitions on each end, updated guard rails and seismic retrofits.
Rufus Bridge
The Rufus Bridge work spans 1,463 feet and consists of grinding and removing two inches of cracked and deteriorating concrete and replacing with it with 3 inches of silica/concrete overlay. This bridge will also receive updated guard rails, new transitions on each end, and a Phase 1 seismic retrofit. Rufus Bridge is in satisfactory condition. However, the deck has areas of delamination, cracking and exposed reinforcement. Patches are deteriorating at the edges. Dense cracking is taking place in the west bound lanes. Potholes are forming in some areas. ODOT bridge crews have repaired several places on this deck in recent past. This bridge will be in a salt application zone for winter maintenance and with exposed rebar and cracking, the risk of accelerated damage due to salt will only worsen.
U.S. 197 over I-84 Bridge
These works will include replacement of the bridge driving surface and repair the bridge expansion joint to preserve the useful life of the bridge, removing the manholes and patch the concrete deck, improving bridge inspection access making continued bridge assessments safer, and replacing of guardrails.
