U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) Paving Project: Cornelius Pass Road to Glencoe Road

Construction Phase

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Hillsboro, North Plains, Washington)

We are repaving U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) in both directions from Cornelius Pass Road to Glencoe Road. We are also making repairs on two bridges and replacing a culvert under the highway. Construction will finish in fall 2024.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Expect intermittent nighttime lane, ramp and shoulder closures on U.S. 26.

Construction Impacts

June 27, 2024 update:
Paving will continue into July followed by permanent striping later in the month. The nighttime directional closures are complete with no plans for any in the future.

In order to maintain a safe work zone for travelers and construction crews, travel lanes and on- and off-ramps will close to traffic at night and during non-commute hours. Emergency vehicles will have access through work zones. Nighttime traffic delays during work are expected. Specifics include:
  • Intermittent nighttime lane and ramp closures on U.S. 26.
  • Seven nights of U.S. 26 traffic detoured off the highway (one direction at a time) between Cornelius Pass Road and Brookwood Parkway. A detour will be in place. [as of 6/26/25 these are complete and are no longer needed]
  • Highway shoulder closures with detours for people who bike along U.S. 26.
Expect periodic construction noise, mostly from heavy equipment and construction trucks (ex: required vehicle reverse noises) and other equipment such as paving machines, generators and compressors. Those working or living near the work areas may hear construction noise. The project noise hotline at 503-412-2349 is available to nearby residences and businesses to help resolve ODOT noise-related concerns 24 hours a day.

Schedule

Construction began in March 2024 and wraps up by the end of the year.

About

We are repaving U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) in both directions from Cornelius Pass Road to Glencoe Road. This section of U.S. 26 travels through Hillsboro and North Plains. We are also making repairs on two bridges and replacing a culvert under the highway.

Paving: Repave approximately six miles of U.S. 26 in both directions from Cornelius Pass Road to Glencoe Road. This section of U.S. 26 travels through Washington County and includes Hillsboro and North Plains. Crews will repair surface cracking and pavement rutting and deterioration before paving.

Bridges: Repair and resurface the bridge deck and replace bridge joints on both U.S. 26 bridges over McKay Creek.

Culvert: Remove and replace a partially collapsed 30-inch culvert under U.S. 26 eastbound. [as of May 2024, the culvert work is complete]

Ramp Meters: Install new ramp meters on the Jackson School Road eastbound on-ramp and the Brookwood Parkway eastbound on-ramp.

Benefits

  • A new road surface will improve the overall quality of U.S. 26, resulting in a smoother and safer highway for drivers.

  • Repairing and resurfacing two bridges preserves and extends their lifespan, allows them to continue to meet all safety standards and reduces the need for costlier replacements.
