U.S. 30 Safety Improvements

Construction Phase

Region 2: Willamette Valley and Northwest Oregon (Rainier, Columbia)

We're making safety improvements on eastbound U.S. 30 to address congestion and queuing from traffic trying to cross the Lewis and Clark Bridge.

Banner: Slow down, in the work zone it could save lives. Building a modern transportation system to help Oregon’s communities and economy thrive. During construction, Give yourself more time, try a new way or mode to get there or take a different route.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

Use caution driving through the area, speed is reduced to 40 mph through the work zone.

Expect delays and occasional lane closures as needed.

Construction Impacts

We're working mostly during the day but there will be occasional night work as well.

Construction Activities

We're constructing two overhead signs, widening the shoulder and installing guardrail at both sign locations.

Tripcheck.com will have the most current information on traffic impacts.

Pedestrians including, those with disabilities, will have access through or around work zones.

Pay attention in the work zone, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work!

Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.

Remember: fines double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.

About

We are addressing safety concerns created by traffic queuing alongside high speed, downhill flow of traffic on U.S. 30. Slow or stopped traffic backs up eastbound U.S. 30 into blind curves creating a safety hazard for motorists headed toward Rainier or trying to access the Lewis and Clark Bridge.

This project will:

  • Construct a digital sign (variable message) at milepost 50.17 to warn eastbound U.S. 30 traffic of queues ahead.

  • Install traffic sensors for queue detection.

  • Construct an overhead sign at milepost 48.89 to advise eastbound traffic that the right lane must exit.

  • Reassign and stripe eastbound right lane approaching the exit for Washington SR 433 as right turn only.

  • Minor shoulder widening and install guard rail at the two sign locations.
