About
The Gorge is a hugely popular place, with over 2 million visitors coming to Multnomah Falls each year. With limited parking and transit options, the parking lots on I-84 and the Historic Highway are often full.
The electronic sign system is one piece of the puzzle in addressing congestion. It will help educate drivers of the current parking lot status (full or open), as well as providing information about highway conditions or emergency situations.
The project will:
- Install one new electronic sign at the Multnomah Falls I-84 parking lot in the eastbound direction (replacing a small sign that now says “lot closed sign”).
- Modify the existing electronic sign at Benson State Park to install a larger sign that can display a variety of messages (currently it reads “exit 31 closed, use exit 45 to Multnomah Falls”).
Three existing electronic signs will be connected with the new signs, allowing for immediate and coordinated messages on I-84.
