OR 8 Fiber Optic Cable Project

Construction Phase

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Beaverton, Washington)

We are installing new overhead and underground fiber optic cable where gaps exist along OR 8 between SW 198th Avenue and OR 217. Work begins in early 2025 and continues through fall 2025.

Impacts

Construction Impacts

Work may occur at multiple intersections at the same time. During construction, travelers can expect:

  • Short-term single lane, shoulder and bike lane closures in construction areas during the day and night.
  • Periodic overnight road closures with traffic lights disabled at some intersections. Watch for flaggers directing traffic.
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with ADA-compliant pedestrian detours.
  • Short-term bus stop relocations.

Noise Impacts During Construction

To minimize traffic impacts during the day, some night work is required. Those working or living in the area may hear the noise from heavy equipment, construction trucks, beeping noise when vehicles are in reverse (required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and equipment such as concrete saws, drills and jackhammers.

ODOT will apply construction noise mitigation measures to reduce noise impacts to surrounding neighbors. Use the 24/7 nighttime noise hotline to reach a live person to discuss any noise concerns: 503-412-2349

Schedule

Construction begins in early 2025 and will continue through fall 2025.

About

We are installing new overhead and underground fiber optic cable where gaps exist along OR 8 between SW 198th Avenue in Aloha to OR 217 in Beaverton. Existing fiber optic cable will also be modified. We rely on fiber optic cable for high-speed communications (also known as broadband) to operate traffic signals and traffic monitoring systems.

Fiber optic cable is the most reliable and consistent medium to deliver broadband, critical for ODOT crews and emergency responders to rapidly respond to traffic incidents and better manage congestion and delays on highways.

This work also sets the foundation for future improvements along the corridor that require high-speed broadband communications.
