I-84: Multnomah Falls Electronic Sign System

Project Completed

Region 1: Portland metro and Hood River County (Multnomah)

We are working to increase safety and reduce congestion in the Columbia Gorge with a variety of projects. The electronic sign system will increase driver awareness of highway conditions, provide alternatives when the Multnomah Falls parking lot is closed and offer flexible messaging in an emergency.

Impacts

Construction Impacts

Construction could start with ground work as early as May, but the sign won't be installed until late-summer/fall 2017 (because of the time required to manufature the sign).

Construction should take place from summer-winter 2017.* The project may require shoulder and single lane closures on I-84.

*Schedule is subject to change.

About

The Gorge is a hugely popular place, with over 2 million visitors coming to Multnomah Falls each year. With limited parking and transit options, the parking lots on I-84 and the Historic Highway are often full.

The electronic sign system is one piece of the puzzle in addressing congestion. It will help educate drivers of the current parking lot status (full or open), as well as providing information about highway conditions or emergency situations.
The project will:
  • Install one new electronic sign at the Multnomah Falls I-84 parking lot in the eastbound direction (replacing a small sign that now says “lot closed sign”).
  • Modify the existing electronic sign at Benson State Park to install a larger sign that can display a variety of messages (currently it reads “exit 31 closed, use exit 45 to Multnomah Falls”).
Three existing electronic signs will be connected with the new signs, allowing for immediate and coordinated messages on I-84.
