Rail Safety Compliance

Light Rail, Streetcar and Trolley Safety

We oversee safety of transit agencies operating rail-fixed guideway systems, such as light rail, streetcars and trolleys.
These systems are regulated through the Federal Transit Administration's State Safety Oversight Program under 49 CFR 673 and 49 CFR Part 674. Learn more at the State Safety Oversight Program website.

Heavy Rail Safety Inspections

Acting as an agent for the Federal Railroad Administration, or FRA, we inspect track, railroad equipment and cars, hazardous materials, signals and train control, crossing and trespasser outreach and operating practices.
Learn more about the six rail safety disciplines and the work of our inspectors at the FRA Safety website.

Quarterly Railroad Hazmat Reports

OAR 741-510-0025 requires railroads transporting hazardous material in Oregon to submit a quarterly report to ODOT describing the type and quantity of hazmat transported. This information is intended to inform emergency response agencies with responsibility to respond to rail incidents involving hazmat. If you are an emergency response agency wanting to request a report for your response area, please email your request to hazmatbyrail@odot.oregon.gov.
