Veterinarians looking for Oregon accreditation need to start with a USDA form 1-36A submitted to the USDA. Once Oregon receives your application we will contact you if any further orientation is required.
Newly graduated vets do not need to supply an Oregon address on their USDA application but do need their Oregon license prior to applying.
USDA accreditation
The USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program authorizes veterinarians to perform state-federal regulatory work such as issuing Certificates of Veterinary Inspection and performing program disease work including Equine Infectious Anemia or TB testing, and Brucellosis vaccination. Veterinarians must be initially accredited by the USDA and then authorized in each state in which they practice.
Two different categories of accreditation are available.
- Category I accreditation allows veterinarians to perform accredited work only on companion animals (dogs, cats, amphibians/reptiles, furbearing animals, laboratory animals, and non-human primates).
- Category II accreditation allows veterinarians to perform accredited work on any species of animal.
Initial accreditation
Veterinarians who wish to become USDA accredited, will need to complete the Initial Accreditation Training, attend an Orientation Program, complete the Oregon state-specific orientation, and submit a VS Form 1-36A to the USDA area office.
Oregon state-specific authorization
Currently accredited veterinarians who wish to become authorized to perform accredited work in Oregon, must submit a VS Form 1-36A to the USDA area office, and complete the Oregon state-specific orientation.
Accreditation renewal
USDA accreditation must be renewed every 3 years. Category I Accredited Veterinarians must complete 3 units of NVAP training modules anytime within their three-year renewal period to renew their accreditation. Similarly, Category II Accredited Veterinarians must complete 6 units of NVAP training modules anytime within their three-year renewal period.
