9/11 Memorial Ceremony Remarks (Spanish)

Good morning. Thank you for being with us today as we remember and honor those who lost their lives on this tragic day 22 years ago – and as we offer love and support for those who continue to grieve for their loved ones and friends who were lost or injured.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, thousands of individuals started their day like any other Tuesday. They kissed their partners, hugged their children, or said hi to their neighbors as they headed out to work – never to return home.
As the events of the day unfolded, countless responders – firefighters, police officers, Good Samaritans – showed unmatched bravery in their effort to help others. They risked their lives to help people they’d never met before, so that those individuals would have the chance to embrace their loved ones again.
Today and every day, we must remember and honor that remarkable courage and selflessness shown by so many.
On that day, the world grieved with us. As a country, we still carry the pain of that day – a day that forever changed our world.
Every one who has lost someone they care about knows that it can lead to a pain that never truly goes away. Time passes and grief takes on different forms.
While we will always grieve, I also want to acknowledge the beautiful humanity that many showed in response to immeasurable tragedy.
We saw an example of this here in Oregon. In the weeks following that horrific day, a thousand Oregonians coordinated to take more than 60 flights to New York City. They took time off from their daily lives, wearing white T-shirts that read, “Oregon ♥ NY,” and stayed for as long as they could to give love and support to their fellow Americans, first responders, and rescue workers whose lives were forever changed.
No one act of kindness can make up for the loss suffered that day. But every effort mattered – and made us stronger – together.
Now, more than two decades removed from that day in September, an entire generation has been raised without having lived through this horrible event. This day, a day of remembrance, is therefore of growing importance because we remember the acts of courage and kindness in response to the tragedy in order to remind us how people showed up for each other. To remind us that out of tragedy, our country showed the best we can be. And we should never forget that.

Buenos días a todos. Gracias por estar hoy con nosotros para recordar y honrar a todos aquellos que perdieron la vida en ese trágico día hace 22 años, y también para brindar nuestro afecto y apoyo a todos aquellos que siguen llorando la pérdida de sus seres queridos y amigos.
La mañana del 11 de septiembre de 2001, miles de personas empezaron el día como cualquier otro martes. Besaron a sus parejas, abrazaron a sus hijos o saludaron a sus vecinos mientras se dirigían al trabajo, para no volver nunca a casa.
A medida que se desarrollaban los acontecimientos del día, innumerables socorristas -bomberos, policías, buenos samaritanos- mostraron una valentía sin precedentes en su esfuerzo por ayudar a los demás. Arriesgaron sus vidas para ayudar a gente que no conocían, para que esas personas tuvieran la oportunidad de volver a abrazar a sus seres queridos.
Hoy y todos los días, debemos recordar y honrar el extraordinario valor y la abnegación demostrada por tantas personas.
Ese día, el mundo entero lloró con nosotros. Como país, todavía sentimos el dolor de aquel día, un día que cambió nuestro mundo para siempre.
Quien ha perdido a un ser querido sabe que el dolor nunca desaparece del todo. El tiempo pasa y el dolor adopta diferentes formas.
Aunque siempre estaremos de luto, también quiero reconocer la hermosa humanidad que muchos mostraron en respuesta a la inconmensurable tragedia.
Vimos un ejemplo de ello aquí, en Oregon. En las semanas que siguieron a aquel horrible día, miles de oregoneses se coordinaron para tomar más de 60 vuelos a Nueva York. Hicieron un paréntesis en su vida cotidiana, vistiendo camisetas blancas en las que se leía "Oregon ♥ NY", y se quedaron todo el tiempo que pudieron para dar cariño y apoyo a sus compatriotas, a los socorristas y a los trabajadores de rescate cuyas vidas fueron cambiadas para siempre.
Ningún acto de bondad puede compensar la pérdida sufrida aquel día. Pero todos los esfuerzos fueron importantes y nos hicieron más fuertes, juntos.
Ahora, a más de dos décadas de aquel día de septiembre, toda una generación ha crecido sin haber vivido este horrible suceso. Por eso este día, es un día para conmemorar, para recordar los actos de valentía y bondad en respuesta a la tragedia, para recordar cómo la gente se ayudó mutuamente. Para que nos acordemos de que, a partir de la tragedia, nuestro país mostró lo mejor que podemos ser. Y eso es algo que nunca debemos olvidar.
