Oregon high school students will be required to pass a financial literacy class to receive their high school diploma beginning with the class of 2027. To support this new requirement, the Oregon Department of Revenue (DOR) has created a presentation and materials focused on one section of financial literacy: Taxes. The department also has employees available to give this presentation in high school classrooms and answer tax questions students have.
Presentation topics
The presentation provides a high-level overview of personal income tax. It reviews Forms W-2, Forms W-4, Forms 1099, tax brackets, credits, deductions, and basic filing information. It's intended to be given during one class period.
The presentation includes practice exercises along with handouts. One exercise is designed to help students understand the information on a paystub related to tax. The other exercise assists students to understand the difference between credits and subtractions, along with how they affect the amount of tax owed.
