About Classification Studies

Classification Study

A classification study reviews a classification or occupation with agency Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). The goal is to change or update a current classification or create a new one. DAS Classification and Compensation does several classification studies during each bargaining session.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Subject Matter Expert

DAS Classification and Compensation holds SME meetings to review job duties, knowledge, and responsibilities with those who know the work best: employees, managers, and first-line supervisors. SMEs play a vital role in ensuring the classification specification accurately defines the work.

During classification study meetings, SMEs should:

  • Actively participate in discussions
  • Identify work performed
  • Share differences in work performed across the agency and statewide
  • Listen to others
  • Provide feedback based on experience and knowledge.
  • Share knowledge about guidelines, rules, and laws related to the work.
  • Review and provide feedback on documents as requested.
