Get the REAL ID option next time you renew your license. Appointments may be available but are not required.

Starting May 7, 2025, the federal government will require every person 18 years and older to present a REAL ID or an
acceptable alternative – like a government-issued passport, passport card or military ID – to board a commercial U.S. flight. REAL ID will also be required to access certain federal facilities like military bases or nuclear plants. Oregon offers both standard issue and REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses, instruction permits and identification cards. If you aren’t flying soon, you can wait to get a REAL ID until it’s time to renew your credential or use a passport.
As the May 7 federal REAL ID deadline approaches, we are seeing greater demand at many DMV offices. Expect longer lines and longer wait times than normal. At busier offices, while getting your ticket, ask if you can provide your cell number to receive text notifications, allowing you to leave and return when your number gets closer. If you don’t need a REAL ID, see if you can complete your service online at

What is REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license, permit or identification card that is also a federally accepted form of identification. REAL ID cards are marked with a star in the upper right corner. Beginning May 7, 2025, everyone 18 and older must show REAL ID or other federally accepted identification at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints and certain federal facilities. It can take up to three weeks to receive your REAL ID in the mail, so allow enough time to get one before boarding a plane.
