 Frequently Asked Questions

Standard drawings are stamped by an ODOT Engineer of Record and are backed by engineering analysis, calculations, and/or justification to support them.

Standard drawings are available for use on public works projects, but cannot be modified by designers on a project-by-project basis.

It is the responsibility of the project professional of record that standard drawings are used as originally intended. Standard drawings are compliant with Oregon Standard Specifications.

Standard details are tools used to quickly add detail to a specific project.

Generally, these fit into one of three scenarios:

  1. A template that needs project-specific data added.
  2. A new design style that is being tried.
  3. The item is not used often, such that updates may need to be added.

Standard details may require modification by the project professional of record. Standard details are the responsibility of the project professional and as such incorporated into the project plans.

Standard drawing reports are additional data for use by the designer.

These reports provide background information and assumptions used in the development of the drawing.

Each standard drawing is marked with an effective date range to help identify which drawing should be used for an upcoming project.

The professional of record should select the drawing with an effective date that corresponds to the project bid date. For example:

A project has a bid date of Aug. 16, 2019. The project's professional of record should select the drawing with an effective date of June 1, 2019 - Nov. 30, 2019, rather than Dec. 1, 2019 - May 31, 2020

Please note:

  1. The drawings are used by multiple government agencies and not all include standard drawings in the plan set.
  2. The standard drawing is valid for the construction life of the project, even if project construction extends beyond the effective date range.

ODOT does not produce hard copies of standard drawings or details; however, the files are available to download and print.

All PDF files are formatted to fit 8-1/2" x 11" paper. These files can be adjusted to print 11" x 17" paper, if desired.

  1. Select the "Properties" button on the "Print" screen to change the paper size.
  2. Ensure the "Page Scaling" is set to "Fit to Printer Margins."
