Project Story - Rogue Basin

Little Applegate Sediment Reduction Project

The Upper Little Applegate River and Yale Creek, containing high quality steelhead trout habitat, were identified by the Applegate River Watershed Council as the two most significant sediment source areas in the Little Applegate River watershed and top priorities for erosion control and sediment reduction efforts. Stream monitoring and road surveys had identified roads and stream crossings as major sediment sources. The project involved grading and rocking key road systems, installing new drainage features, improving stream crossings and culverts, and limiting access to certain areas during wet periods. Surveys at project sites show the treatments to be effective in eliminating sediment delivery from road surfaces and ditches and in preventing larger sediment events. Project partners included area residents, DEQ, BLM, USFS, Fruit Growers Supply Company, and OWEB.

Grant Program

The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board provides grants to help Oregonians improve rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands and fish and wildlife habitat. Local citizens propose what needs to be done in their communities and work with OWEB for funding and support. These projects contribute to the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds and the Oregon Conservation Strategy by protecting, restoring and improving clean water and fish and wildlife habitat.

Watershed Process and Function

Natural watershed functions - such as vegetation structure, habitat complexity, water quality and quantity, species diversity, flood plain interaction and others, combine to create watershed process. Watershed process is the foundation for healthy watersheds that provide clean water and fish and wildlife habitat. Natural watershed functions and process have been eliminated, altered or reduced in many areas, and actions to restore those processes and functions are often necessary to achieve healthy watersheds.

Watershed Council Listening Sessions

February 22 - March 5, 2010
OWEB will be hosting six facilitated listening sessions around the state to solicit feedback from watershed council coordinators, staff, and board members on the Watershed Council Support funding process.

2009-2011 Small Grant Applications are Available

Small Grant applications forms and instructions for the 2009-2011 biennium are now available. All Small Grants requests must be on the new form, old application forms will not be accepted. The OWEB Board will finalize the 2009-2011 OWEB Spending Plan including Small Grant funding levels at its September 15-16 meeting in Joseph, OR.
