Two Portland-area men were arrested Friday morning after they crashed the stolen car they were in while attempting to elude Oregon State Police troopers on Interstate 84 west of Ontario.
On December 7, 2007 at about 8:30 a.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Trish Draze saw a possible disabled Kia Sephia on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 84 west of Ontario. Senior Trooper Draze contacted the two occupants to offer assistance and noticed the ignition was missing. While questioning the two men they became uncooperative. Shortly after a second OSP trooper arrived on scene, the car accelerated away from the shoulder westbound.
Senior Trooper Draze overtook the Kia Sephia and continued attempting to get the driver to stop, but it continued westbound at speeds up to 105 mph in light rain and snow conditions.
At 8:55 a.m. and after attempting to elude the state troopers for approximately 28 miles, the car exited near milepost 345 and was unable to stop or make the turn at the bottom of the off ramp. The car, which was later determined to be stolen from the Tigard area, drove across the t-intersection and crashed into an embankment where it came to a stop.
The two occupants received minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital where they were treated and released.
Driver JOSE CUAUHTEMOC GARCIA LOPEZ, age 25, from southeast Portland, was arrested on Multnomah County fail to appear warrants for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and Furnishing False Information to a Police Officer. GARCIA LOPEZ, who last reported for registration two years ago, was also lodged in Malheur County Jail for:
- Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle
- Reckless Driving
- Driving While Suspended
- Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
- Recklessly Endangering Another Person
Passenger JOSE CARLOS IBARRA ROMERO, age 20, from east Portland, was lodged in Malheur County Jail for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.
