12/02/2007
Sergeant Steve J. Mitchell
Oregon State Police - Roseburg
Office: (541) 440-3334 ext. 233

An intoxicated wrong way driver is facing several charges following a Saturday evening injury traffic crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 about thirteen miles north of Sutherlin in Douglas County. Several driving complaints reporting the wrong way driver were received as the lone Oregon State Police trooper on duty out of the Roseburg office was attempting to intercept the vehicle before it was involved in the crash.

On December 1, 2007 at approximately 6:56 p.m. a 1002 Pontiac Sunbird driven by LINDA G. OLSON, age 49, from Cottage Grove, was southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 149 when it sideswiped a northbound 2002 Ford F350 pickup driven by MICHAEL McLAURIN, age 55, from The Dalles. After sideswiping the pickup, the Pontiac crashed head-on with a 1991 Honda Civic driven by JEREMY LINN, age 20, from Cottage Grove. An unknown color Geo Tracker reportedly crashed into the back of the Ford pickup but left the scene before emergency responders arrived, and investigators have not identified that vehicle or driver.

All involved vehicle occupants were using safety restraints.

OLSON was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers contacted OLSON at the hospital and cited her to appear in Douglas County Circuit Court for:
  • Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants
  • Assault in the Fourth Degree
  • 8 counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person
  • Reckless Driving

McLAURIN and his passneger/wife, Mary McLAURIN, age 55, were not injured.

LINN and his passenger, MISTY LOWELESS, age 28, from Cottage Grove, were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center where they were treated and released for minor injuries.

OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT and fire personnel from North Douglas Fire District. The northbound lanes were closed for about three hours.
