A Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza, including the 2009 Oregon Heritage Conference, the Pacific Northwest History Conference and the annual meetings of the Northwest Archivists and the Northwest Oral History Association, took place April 15-18 in Portland.

Attended by more than 400 people from seven states, the Extravaganza had the theme of "Rendezvous 2009!" The theme reflected the sharing of ideas, perspectives, skills and cultures in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest that took place at the Extravaganza.

The Extravaganza informed and inspired people. Attendees included community leaders, staff and volunteers from historical societies, museums, historic cemeteries, ethnic organizations, schools, historic preservation commissions, humanities groups, the tourism industry, economic development, history buffs and professional historians, archaeologists, youth, and local, tribal, state and federal governments.

The Extravaganza also included the third annual Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards and presentations by university students who have been selected as Oregon Heritage Fellows.

Dates for the next Oregon Heritage Conference will be set in about six months.

Technology poster session
The Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza embraced technology by hosting a “digital” poster session. Much like the traditional poster session, this was a period when organizations showed off their great projects and practices.

While technology for technology’s sake is not a great idea, technology for the mission’s sake is a wonderful idea. From advances in scanning, to databases, to public accessibility, to interaction, all kinds of options have emerged. This was a chance to exhibit and explore new ideas and approaches that organizations such as museums, archives, libraries, educational institutions and others are taking with technology to better meet their goals.
