LICENSE DEFINITIONS

PHYSICIANS
 
Medical Doctor (MD):
 
A doctor of medicine (allopathic) is a trained physician licensed to practice medicine, prescribe medications, perform surgery, and utilize any of a number of recognized modalities of therapy in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, illness, injury, and physical conditions. Medical doctors utilize knowledge gained in the western tradition of scientific study, observation, and experimentation, including anatomy, cellular biology, chemistry, and other areas. In Oregon, a MD's scope of practice also includes the practice of acupuncture.
 
Doctor of Osteopathy (DO):
 
A doctor of medicine (osteopathic) is a trained physician licensed to practice medicine, prescribe medications, perform surgery, and utilize any of a number of recognized modalities of therapy in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, illness, injury, and physical conditions, including the use of manipulative therapy. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes the relationship between the body's nerves, muscles, bones, and organs. The osteopathic philosophy of treating the whole person is applied to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, disease, and injury. In Oregon, a DO's scope of practice also includes the practice of acupuncture.
 
Visiting Physician
 
"Visiting Physician" means an out-of-state physician who comes in to Oregon to practice in a hospital in order to obtain or provide training for a period of up to ten days no more than three times a year.
 
Limited License, Special (LL,S)
 
This limited license may be granted to a physician applicant who has completed an application to the satisfaction of the Board and who wishes to practice prior to being granted a permanent license. The Limited License, Special allows the physician to practice until the next quarterly Board meeting, and it expires on the second day of the Board meeting.
 
Limited License, SPEX (LL,SX)
 
This limited license may be granted to a physician applicant who has completed an application to the satisfaction of the Board. The only limits are that the SPEX examination must be passed prior to permanent licensure, and the limited license cannot be issued for longer than six months.
 
Limited License, Postgraduate (LL,PG)
 
The LL,PG limits the physician practice to an accredited training program. The physician may NOT work outside the accredited training program. Moonlighting is NOT allowed under this limited license. This limited license is issued annually and can be renewed for all subsequent years of an accredited training program.
 
Limited License, Fellow (LL,F)
 
The LL,F is limited to practice only as part of a supervised fellowship program of an approved school of medicine or affiliated teaching institution. The physician may NOT practice outside a training program. Moonlighting is NOT allowed under this limited license. Can be issued annually for a total of two years only.
 
Limited License, Visiting Professor (LL,VP)
 
This limited license is issued for a physician who has received a teaching position in an approved medical school or affiliated teaching institution in the state. The limited license allows practice only to the extent that such practice is incident to and a necessary part of the duties as approved by the Board. Moonlighting is NOT allowed under this limited license. Can be issued annually for a total of two years only.
 
Limited License, Medical Faculty (LL,MF)
 
This limited license is issued to a physician who receives a full time faculty position in an accredited medical school. The limited license allows practice only to the extent that such practice is incident to and a necessary part of the duties as approved by the Board. Moonlighting is NOT allowed under this limited license. Can be issued annually for a total of four years only.
 
 
 
PODIATRISTS
 
Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM):
 
A podiatric physician is trained to diagnose and perform medical, physical or surgical treatments related strictly to ailments of the human foot.
 
Limited License, Special (LL,S)
 
This limited license may be granted to a podiatric applicant who has completed an application to the satisfaction of the Board and who wishes to practice prior to being granted a permanent license. The Limited License, Special allows the podiatrist to practice until the next quarterly Board meeting, and it expires on the second day of the Board meeting.
 
Limited License, Postgraduate (LL,PG)
 
The LL,PG limits the podiatric practice to an accredited training program. The podiatrist may NOT work outside the accredited training program. Moonlighting is NOT allowed under this limited license. This limited license is issued annually and can be renewed for all subsequent years of an accredited training program.
 
 
 
PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS
 
Physician Assistant (PA):
 
A physician assistant provides medical services under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician. Within the physician/PA relationship, physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The clinical role of physician assistants includes primary and specialty care in medical and surgical practice settings in both urban and rural areas.
 
Limited License, Special (LL,S)
 
This limited license may be granted to a physician assistant applicant who has completed an application to the satisfaction of the Board and who wishes to practice prior to being granted a permanent license. The Limited License, Special allows the licensee to practice until the next quarterly Board meeting. This limited license expires on the second day of the Board meeting.
 
Limited License, Postgraduate (LL,PG)
 
The LL,PG is granted for one year, during which time the PA must successfully pass the NCCPA examination. This limited license is granted for one year only.
 
 
 
ACUPUNCTURISTS
 
Acupuncturist (LAc)
 
An acupuncturist provides health care using acupuncture and other forms of traditional Oriental Medicine. Acupuncture treats neurological, organic or functional disorders by stimulation of specific points on the surface of the body by insertion of needles. Under Oregon law, the practice of acupuncture also includes traditional and modern techniques of oriental diagnosis and evaluation; Oriental massage, exercise and related therapeutic methods; use of Oriental herbs, vitamins, minerals, and dietary advice.
 
Limited License, Special (LL,S)
 
This limited license may be granted to an acupuncture applicant who has completed an application to the satisfaction of the Board and who wishes to practice prior to being granted a permanent license. The Limited License, Special allows the acupuncturist to practice until the next quarterly Board meeting, and it expires on the second day of the Board meeting.
 
Limited License, Postgraduate (LL,PG)
 
The LL,PG is granted for a year to acupuncturists who have not yet passed the NCCAOM examination, and who wish to obtain clinical training under the supervision of a Board approved clinical supervisor. The clinical supervisor must be on-site and available to supervise when the applicant is training. Applicant must identify themselves to patients as an acupuncture trainee and wear a name-tag saying that they are an acupuncture trainee. The Limited License, Postgraduate is granted for one year and is non-renewable.
 
Limited License, Visiting Professor (LL,VP)
 
This limited license is granted to an acupuncturist who receives a teaching position in one of Oregon's schools/programs of acupuncture. If qualified, the licensee with a LL,VP also may be approved as a clinical supervisor at the program/school. The limited license may be granted for one year and renewed for two additional years.
