ODOT announces second round of public workshops for the I-84 Corridor Strategy Project

Beginning Monday, May 9, 2005, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and its public agency partners will hold a series of public meetings to update the public on the latest work in developing a long-term strategy to guide design, construction, and management activities for the Interstate 84 corridor in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

A first round of public workshops to gather community perspectives was held in January. That input has been used to craft a draft vision statement, goals, and objectives, which will be presented in this second round of public workshops.

Why develop a strategy for the I-84 Corridor?

To date, there have been no specific guidelines for improvements or modifications to features in the I‑84 corridor, making it difficult to implement needed improvements in an efficient manner. ODOT is working closely with the Columbia River Gorge Commission, U.S. Forest Service, Federal Highway Administration, and counties within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The new corridor strategy will help ODOT manage and improve the interstate in a manner that meets public safety and transportation needs while also meeting National Scenic Area provisions. The strategy will include:

  • A vision statement, goals, and objectives to guide long-term management, design, and construction activities within the corridor
  • Design guidelines (conceptual illustrations and suggestions related to form, line, color, and texture of features and materials)
  • An interdisciplinary, interagency project planning and development process

Public invited to help develop the I-84 Corridor Strategy

Discussion in the May workshops will help shape development of design guidelines for the corridor – the next stage of the project. In addition to the meetings listed below, daytime workshop sessions for special interest groups will be held May 9, 10, and 11, with content similar to the evening workshop sessions.
