What goes up must come down. ODOT makes way for the new Willamette River Bridge by demolishing the 2,000-foot long, 50-foot high decommissioned structure. The demolition, which may appear chaotic to an untrained eye, is actually a carefully orchestrated performance that can occur only after months of careful planning and preparation intended to leave nothing to chance.

Project schedules sometimes force construction into the blustery winter months, sending crews into conditions that create frosty faces and numb toes. But like the fabled postman, ODOT’s contractors don’t let the winter weather delay their swift completion of projects across the state. Despite chilly temperatures and less than ideal weather, several bridge program projects are moving ahead this winter, helping to ensure on-time project deliveries and minimal freight disruptions. Red stars, green peace signs and yellow flowers adorn new birdhouses to be placed around the town of Veneta in hopes of luring bluebirds to nest. Bluebirds are likely to gravitate toward these colorful wood homes designed especially for them and built by students at the recent ODOT educational day at Fern Ridge Middle School and Veneta Elementary School. Read more about the habitat restoration that came about as part of a bridge program project to repair or replace seven bridges around Veneta, west and south of Eugene.
