ODOT engineers from all disciplines -- environmental, civil, geo-hydro, construction, traffic and more, are visiting classrooms all over Oregon during “National Engineers Month” in February. It’s part of a nationwide effort to engage young minds in the immense options a career in engineering and technology provides.

At ODOT, a workforce shortage is looming. With about 42 percent of Highway Division staff in managerial and/or leadership positions eligible to retire in the next five years, it is essential for the agency to promote engineering careers.

ODOT engineers are joining several hundred other engineers in the 15th annual event, which also includes “National Engineers Week,” Feb. 15-21. Both events are aimed at increasing awareness of the positive, wide-ranging impact engineering has on communities, the economy and Oregon life. For more information, visit http://www.asceor.org/45th-annual-engineers-week/ and www.becpdx.org.

School districts participating in the National Engineers Week and National Engineers Month programs include Albany, Battleground, Beaverton, Bend-La Pine, Centennial, Clackamas,  Estacada, Evergreen, Gladstone, Gresham-Barlow, Hillsboro, Hood River , Jackson, La Center, Newburg, North Marion, North Wasco, Pendleton, Portland, Salem-Keizer, Sherwood, Tigard-Tualatin, Vancouver, Yamhill County, and others.
