Millions of years ago, mighty lava flows created the rock beneath the Santiam State Forest. Today, lush forests cover the ancient lava flows. Clear, crisp streams flow and tumble over a mighty foundation of volcanic rock to create breathtaking waterfalls. While you explore the forest you may encounter many hidden waterfalls among the trees. Three of the most spectacular waterfalls found on the Santiam State Forest are Shellburg Falls and Upper and Lower Butte Creek Falls.

Shellburg Falls in late winter
|
You will find Shellburg Falls near Lyons, hidden among towering Douglas-fir and western hemlock. This 100-foot waterfall flows over a basalt ledge, splashing down into a cold, clear pool. During the winter months, Shellburg Falls roars with heavy rains and snow melt, while during late summer it turns into a quiet, shimmering curtain of water. The Shellburg Falls Trail is a hiking-only trail.
Open: Walk-in access year-round; drive in access May 20 — November 1
Please see the Shelburg Falls Recreation Area brochure to learn more.

| Butte Creek Falls |
|
Located near Scott’s Mills, the Butte Creek Waterfalls offer two very unique experiences.
You may view Lower Butte Creek Falls from a high rock out cropping as it tumbles 80 feet to a series of deep pools.
An enormous basalt ledge forms the Upper Butte Creek Falls. Visitors may explore deep into a cave formed by this ledge, while Butte Creek flows over them, before cascading 40 feet into a wide clear pool. This pool is excellent for swimming and cooling off during hot summer days. During the winter months, both waterfalls are extremely powerful and turbulent.
Open: Year-round
Please see the Butte Creek Falls Trail brochure to learn more.
