| Forestland classification panel to meet March 1, Salem |
|
| 02/26/2007 |
The Forestland Classification Steering Committee will hear state and local perspectives on funding for wildfire protection and discuss Oregon's wildland-urban interface laws when it meets on March 1 in Salem. The meeting is open to the public.
Officials from the Oregon Department of Forestry, Office of State Fire Marshal, and rural and city fire districts will brief the committee on how their respective firefighting activities are funded.
Appointed by the Oregon Department of Forestry, the 29-member panel held its first meeting on Feb. 6 to launch a large-scale review of the decades-old system used to coordinate wildfire protection for forestlands and rural communities.
Representing a broad cross-section of private and public organizations that share an interest in protecting the forest resource and rural communities in and adjacent to forestlands, the committee will also review an act passed by the Oregon Legislature in 1997 that addresses the wildfire threat to the state's expanding wildland-urban interface.
Also on the March 1 agenda is an overview of the process the committee will follow in fulfilling its charge. The department has tasked the committee with providing a set of recommended revisions to the forestland classification system by Jan. 1, 2008.
The Forestland Classification Steering Committee will meet at 9 a.m. at the Oregon Department of Forestry headquarters office in the Tillamook Conference Room - Building C, 2600 State St. in Salem.
Accommodations for people with disabilities, and special materials, services or assistance can be arranged by calling the Oregon Department of Forestry Agency Affairs Office at least 48 hours before the meeting - 503-945-7200, text telephone 503-945-7213 (in Salem).
