The purpose of the Oregon Roundtable on Sustainable Forests will be to engage multiple stakeholders through collaborative efforts to advance understanding, assessment, and reporting of forest sustainability.
The Roundtable creates the opportunity to promote forest resource management in a manner that integrates environmental, economic, and social considerations, using the goals and objectives of the Forestry Program for Oregon and the Oregon Indicators of Sustainable Forest Management as common state frameworks.
The Oregon Roundtable is intended to be an open, participant-driven network and a forum for discussion and action. Participation in the Roundtable is intended to remain voluntary and open to all. There will be no Roundtable “members,” only “participants.” The Roundtable will become a gathering place for anyone who is interested in Oregon’s forests. It will be a place to share information, to evaluate and discuss environmental, economic, and social conditions and trends, to build common ground, and to help shape a common understanding and vision for the future. Its purpose is not acting solely as an advisory committee to the Oregon Board of Forestry or the Oregon Department of Forestry, although both hope to benefit from the Roundtable’s collective wisdom. Over time, other forest policy bodies and decision-makers will likely also want to access the Roundtable forum.
In the short-term, Roundtable participants already have the opportunity to engage in sustainable forest management issues at various scales. Examples include:
National:
- Evaluating the recently published draft National Report on Sustainable Forests
- Interacting with other states’ participants working on initiatives connected through the national Roundtable on Sustainable Forests
- Participating in conversations regarding national policy-making on sustainable forestry
State:
- Participating in the evaluation of established Oregon Indicators of Sustainable Forest Management
- Interacting with the Board of Forestry during the development of the goals and objectives for the 2011 Forestry Program for Oregon and future Board work plans
- Interacting with the Department of Forestry in the development of a statewide forest assessment required by the USDA Forest Service’s State and Private Forestry Program to be completed by the Spring of 2010
Local:
- Linking local collaborative efforts addressing sustainable forest management with each other and with state, regional, and national sustainable forestry work
- Widening the circle of participation in the Oregon Roundtable by inviting friends, colleagues, and even adversaries to join
These are just ideas to begin shaping a possible work plan for the Oregon Roundtable. Ultimately, it will be the Roundtable participants themselves, guided by committed leadership and a clear charter, that will determine your actual work plan.
The first meeting of the Roundtable is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Tillamook Conference Room at Oregon Department of Forestry headquarters in Salem. The objectives for this facilitated three-hour meeting will be to:
- To provide background information and summarize the Board of Forestry’s intent for establishing the Oregon Roundtable on Sustainable Forests
- Learn more about each other and the perspectives we bring to the table regarding sustainable forestry
- Share ideas about how the Oregon Roundtable on Sustainable Forests might function
- Reach agreement on next steps, including possible formation of a core group of folks committed to drafting a proposed Roundtable charter and a short-term work plan

September 24, 2009
The second meeting of the Oregon Roundtable on Sustainable Forests is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, at Oregon Department of Forestry headquarters in Salem. A meeting agenda will be available in early September. The purpose of the meeting will be to determine the structure and function of the Oregon Roundtable on Sustainable Forests. As a follow-up to the first meeting on March 6, 2009, several people volunteered to serve on a subcommittee to develop a proposal to describe the organization and approach of such a Roundtable. These volunteers met on June 1 to discuss their ideas on the role of a Roundtable, its goals, and how it would function. The group also reviewed upcoming Board of Forestry projects that could be subjects for Roundtable discussions. A four-person subgroup was asked to develop a specific written proposal for an Oregon Roundtable approach and to identify a specific pilot project dealing with some or all of the upcoming Board of Forestry projects. The draft proposal has been shared with the subcommittee and both the proposal the comments received to date from subcommittee members are posted below.
