Introduction

We are pleased that you are interested in seasonal employment with the Oregon Department of Forestry. This information will assist you in making an application by listing job descriptions, salaries, and requirements for a variety of seasonal positions. Some of our seasonal positions include duties that require the possession of a commercial driver’s license. If so, pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and regulations established by the Federal Highway Administration, you will be required to pass a pre-employment controlled substance test as a condition of hire. If you pass this test and are hired, you will also be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing. Additionally, as a condition of hire, you will be required to pass what is commonly referred to as the "Pack Test." The "Pack Test" is a valid, job-related test that measures an individual´s capacity for arduous work. The test consists of performing a three-mile hike over level terrain in 45 minutes while carrying a 45-pound backpack. Prior to an interview, applicants are strongly encouraged to train for arduous level work capacity. You should begin training at least four weeks before you expect to take the test. Begin training for the test by walking three miles without a pack. Once this distance can be covered in 45 minutes, gradually begin carrying some weight. Continue to increase the weight until you can meet the requirements of the test within the allotted time. Prior to training for the "Pack Test," you should consult your physician if you have been inactive; have a history of heart problems; experience chest pain or loss of balance; or have a joint problem that could be made worse by a change in physical activity. We appreciate your interest in seasonal employment with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

After determining the position and location you prefer, contact the Oregon Department of Forestry office in that location to see when and how these positions are being filled. All seasonal applications MUST be submitted to each district office in each area you are willing to work. Applications will be accepted in most areas from January 1 to March 31, but check with your local Oregon Department of Forestry office for a recommendation on the best time to submit your application as deadlines vary.


Seasonal Positions

The salary rates are for fire fighting positions. Student Worker Duties • Fight forest fires and maintain fire trails as a member of the suppression crew. • Perform manual work in building and ground maintenance, and fire fighting tool maintenance. Minimum Qualifications • 16 years of age. • Ability to follow written and oral instructions without close supervision. • Ability to use simple tools. • Ability to work safely. • Physical ability to perform strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions. • Must be a least a half-time student during the school year. Salary • $9.64 to $12.77 per hour. Forest Lookout Duties • Detect, locate, and report forest fires from a lookout tower. • Maintain records and make reports involving weather data, etc. • Perform minor building maintenance. Minimum Qualifications • 16 years of age. • Ability to understand and follow instructions. • Ability to keep records; make clear oral and written reports. Salary • $9.29 to $12.29 per hour. Living Facilities • Housing and utilities furnished at some locations. • Individual supplies own food. Laborer I Duties • Perform manual labor in connection with forest fire suppression, forest road and trail maintenance. • Assist with grounds and headquarters maintenance. • On occasion perform forest management tasks involving pre-commercial thinning, hand release, animal control, etc. Minimum Qualifications • 18 years of age. • Physical ability to perform strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions. • Ability to work safely. • Ability to use simple tools. • Ability to follow written and oral instructions. • Ability to operate vehicles ranging from small pick-ups to heavy fire engines. Salary • $10.20 to $13.77 per hour. Laborer II Duties • Lead worker of fire suppression crew. • Perform skilled duties such as operating equipment and doing basic carpentry work. • Assist forest technicians in forest management activities such as timber cruising, labor work and forest engineering, reforestation and rehabilitation work. Minimum Qualifications • 18 years of age. • Ability to direct small fire crews. • Ability to organize and perform work safely and efficiently with a minimum amount of direct supervision. • Knowledge of fire equipment capabilities. • Ability to operate vehicles ranging from small pick-ups to heavy fire engines. • Ability to read and interpret maps and aerial photos. • Ability to apply technical forest fire knowledge and skills in field situations and arrive at sound and timely decisions. • Physical ability to perform strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions. Salary • $11.44 to $15.70 per hour. Forest Communications Dispatcher Duties • Receives reports of fires and dispatches firefighters, equipment and supplies to the scene of the fire. • Maintains clerical logs and records and performs related miscellaneous office work. • Answers questions from the public regarding forestry and fire protection. Minimum Qualifications • Ability to communicate clearly and project voice over telephone and radio. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Salary • $11.00 to $14.97 per hour.
