History in Oregon
The seed beetle Bruchidius villosus was first released in Oregon in 1998, in Marion and Lane Counties. The beetle is an accidental introduction to the East Coast, but went through the TAG testing protocol for safety in order to be introduced into OR. The insect has also been released as a biocontrol agent in New Zealand. The beetle has been introduced at numerous sites since 2000. Populations are slowly increasing. Limited redistribution began in 2004. In 2001, it was found to attack French broom in the Eugene area.
