2005 Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board
Activities Summary
The Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board met three times during 2005, in Salem, Hood River, and The Dalles. The board was encouraged by the interest shown by students from an Environmental Science class at Western Oregon University who attended the Salem meeting. The students asked good questions and displayed a keen awareness of the important issues facing Hanford.
This year the board welcomed new members Barry Beyeler of Boardman and Max Power of Yachats, and new legislative members Senators Margaret Carter and Rick Metsger, and Representative Mary Nolan.
During the year, the board developed a white paper detailing its position on the concept of capping waste sites. The board believes capping should be a last resort. The white paper was widely distributed and received positive feedback. A copy of the paper is on this website.
Speakers at the meetings included staff from the Washington Department of Ecology, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Department of Energy’s Richland Operations and Office of River Protection offices. The Board heard presentations on issues including tank waste retrieval, construction of the waste treatment facilities, relocation of the spent fuel stored in the K-basins, groundwater issues, transport of radioactive waste through Oregon, pending litigation about Hanford issues, and public involvement activities.
