Columbia Generating Station
Columbia Generating Station

The Columbia Generating Station (CGS) (photo) is a commercial nuclear power plant within the boundaries of the Hanford Site. CGS is a 1,150 megawatt boiling water reactor owned and operated by Energy Northwest. Energy Northwest built CGS on land leased from USDOE. Unlike USDOE facilities at Hanford, CGS (turbine photo) must meet strict safety requirements of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. USDOE-Richland is responsible for onsite response to an emergency at its facilities on the Hanford Site.

Energy Northwest is responsible for onsite response to an emergency at CGS. The states of Washington and Oregon, and their affected counties, must handle off site response.

The northern parts of Umatilla and Morrow counties fall within the Hanford/CGS 50-mile planning zone. Oregon and the two counties, along with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the state of Washington, USDOE-Richland and Energy Northwest work together to plan a coordinated response to an emergency at Hanford.
