Condensing Furnaces and Boilers and Air Handlers for hydronic systems
|
Premium efficiency furnaces, boilers and air handlers can reduce your home energy costs and improve comfort. Installation of these systems does not require a Department of Energy tax credit-certified technician. Be sure the system you install meets the eligibility requirements for each technology below.
If you install a new qualifying premium efficiency heating system, having premium efficiency ducts will add a $150 tax credit, in addition to the separate tax credits for the heating system and duct sealing. We request that applications for the qualifying furnace or boiler and the premium ducts must be submitted at the same time to qualify for the additional tax credit.
Forced Air Furnaces
Furnaces installed after January 1, 2009 qualify for a tax credit of up to $350 if it meets the following minimum requirements:
- Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is 92 percent or higher
- Has an electrically-efficient fan motor - listed in the Gas Appliance Manufacturers' Directory (GAMA) with the "e" symbol. These are typically marketed as "variable speed" blowers. Multi-speed and single speed motors are not electrically efficient.
- System must be installed with ducted outdoor air for combustion. Models that can be installed using either inside or outside combustion air should indicate on the final invoice that the installation was outside combustion air ("two-pipe"), including furnaces and boilers installed in garages.
A current list of qualifying models is available here. Newer qualifying models may be released and listed in the GAMA directory. http://www.ahrinet.org/Content/ResidentialFurnace_592.aspx
Note: in "dual fuel" or "hybrid" systems with a gas furnace installed as a backup to a heat pump, only the primary heating system will be eligible for a tax credit. Installations in rental and commercial property should apply through the Business Energy Tax Credit program.
Boilers
A boiler qualifies for a tax credit of up to a $225 if it meets the following minimum requirements:
- Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 92 percent or higher
- Installed with an outdoor thermostat/reset control, which should be listed on final invoice.
A current list of qualifying models is available here. Newer qualifying models may be released and listed in the GAMA directory. http://www.ahrinet.org/Content/ResidentialFurnace_592.aspx)
Hydronic Air Handler
An air handler qualifies for up to a $125 tax credit if it meets the following minimum requirements:
- Installed as part of a hydronic space heating system (i.e. with a boiler or tankless water heater as heat source)
- Equipped with an electronically commutated, permanent magnet variable speed DC (ECPM) motor. Models that have integral heat recovery or energy recovery ventilation capability will receive an additional $225 tax credit.
We do not maintain a list of qualifying hydronic air handlers. Please have your contractor provide you a manufacturers specification sheet indicating the hydronic air handler you installed has an ECPM motor.
"Combo" Space and Water Heating Systems
Premium efficiency combination ("combo") space and water heating systems consist of a qualifying premium efficiency water heater or boiler that serves both the domestic hot water needs and provides space heat through a coil in an air handler, or directly through hydronic baseboard heaters or in-floor radiant heat.
If a premium efficiency water heater is the source of heat, apply for the tax credit on the basis of the efficiency of the water heater. The tax credit is the amount listed for qualifying water heater models or 25 percent of the purchase price, whichever is less.
If a premium efficiency boiler is the source of heat, apply for the tax credit using the form for qualifying furnaces, boilers and air handlers. At the present time, there is no tax credit for a passive water storage tank (sometimes called an indirect water heater) that might be installed in such a system.
If a premium efficiency air handler is installed to distribute the heat via forced air, as part of a "combo" system, a separate tax credit is possible for qualifying air handlers.
