| State to honor 166 fallen law enforcement officers May 10 |

The Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training will host its annual Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Ceremony at 1 p.m., May 10, at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, 4190 Aumsville Highway, Salem. The ceremony will honor 166 officers who have given their lives while serving the citizens of Oregon during the last century.
"Each year we strive to recognize the significant sacrifice these men and women, and their families, have made while providing law enforcement services in our state," said DPSST Academy Training Director Cameron Campbell. "The ceremony is a small gesture of appreciation for the dedication these officers had to their work, and to the people they served."
Prior to the ceremony, families of the fallen will be presented with a commemorative, hand-penned ink-drawing of the granite memorial wall. The presentation will be made by Gov. Theodore Kulongoski in a private, families-only reception, beginning at noon. Attorney General Hardy Myers is slated to be the keynote speaker at this year's memorial ceremony.
"This year we are working harder than ever to honor families who have lost loved-ones. We are deeply committed to letting them know how much we care about the personal sacrifices they’ve had to make as a result of losing their parent, spouse or child," Campbell explained.
Families, friends and peers of Oregon’s fallen officers are invited to attend, as are members of the Concerns Of Police Survivors (COPS) organization who reside in Oregon, but may have lost a loved-one in the line of duty in another state.
“We want to make certain that all families, who want to honor a deceased family member or friend, feel welcome at this event even if the death occurs outside of Oregon. The memorial ceremony will focus on Oregon’s fallen, but will also include a time to remember officers who have given their lives across the country,” Campbell said.
The memorial ceremony is an annual event hosted by DPSST, with participation and support from law enforcement professionals from all reaches of the state.
