Criteria for Enrollment:
 
 
This Building Construction Technology program is open-entry and open-exit. Prior to entry, an inmate must be assessed to determine his reading, writing, and math skills. An applicant must receive a CASAS reading score of 242 and a CASAS math score of 236. Inmates who score less than 242 in reading or 236 in math  may enroll in a Basic Skills Upgrade class. In addition to the CASAS math and reading test, all inmates must take the COMPASS assessment, which determines the inmate student’s individualized placement in academic classes. Assessment is an important key to student success.
 
Description of Program:
 
This open-entry/open-exit program is self-paced and utilizes competency-based instructional techniques. Learning activities include classroom instruction, individual and small group instruction, computer-assisted instruction, multimedia including video, CD and DVD, hands-on techniques, and work experiences. This one-year program provides the inmate student with the mastery of skills required for employment in the residential construction industry upon parole. Successful completion of the program. leads to a one year Building Construction Technology Certificate from Treasure Valley Community College as well as nationally recognized certificates awarded by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). This BCT program represents a collaborative effort amongst the Treasure Valley Community College, Snake River Correctional Institution, the Idaho Association of General Contractors (AGC), as well as the NCCER. The graduate of the one year program is eligible to take classes leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) from Treasure Valley Community College.

  • College Success and Survival Skills
  • Bookkeeping and Accounting
  • Employability and Work Maturity Skills
  • Communication Skills

Practical Experience
 
The Modular Home Project provides inmates the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in the real world. The program provides students the opportunity to build several styles of homes.  The houses are built on-site at SRCI and transported to the customer’s location. Ideal for farm migrant workers, the completely furnished homes involve the inmates in all phases of residential construction. Oregon Housing and Community Services grants and tax credits to qualified buyers, making these homes very affordable.
