State operated residential care facilities for residents with severe disabilities
Worksite Redesign Technical
Advisory Project
Extended Family Model II, Floor Plan
The Extended Family Group Home Prototype is designed to accommodate up to
four residents with varying degrees of disabilities. Separated by a centrally
located shared laundry area and staff area, the home is divided into a three-bedroom
side with a shared living and dining areas and a one- bedroom side with its
own living and dining area. Both sides have a covered entry porch and a secured,
full-size kitchen. The rooms of the house are simply configured and well proportioned,
with generous windows for natural light and views.
Located off a wide hallway, the bathrooms are designed to accommodate all
levels of disabilities and to protect staff from worksite injuries. The large
open rooms allow easy access to all fixtures. Tile wainscot on walls and non-skid
tile on floors are easy to clean and disinfect, and create a fully waterproof
space. Operable windows with obscure glazing provide natural light and light
over the sink provide diffuse artificial light where it is needed most. Continuous
blocking in walls at grab bar height allows for easy installation of grab bars
as needed. Walls sub-sheeted with 1/2" plywood from floor to ceiling are
durable and allow for secure attachment of future bars, lifts or storage cabinets.
