Rubella Serology (German Measles)
The OSPHL performs the Microparticle Enzyme Immunoassay (MEIA) test for immune status. This test is available for those who meet any of the following criteria:
1. Females needing the test to meet requirements for an out-of-state marriage license.
2. Females in LHD family planning clinics, in State institutions or users of State-supplied vaccine.
3. Prenatal clients seen in LHDs.
Please use Form # 42, Virology/Immunology Request to submit specimens for rubella immune status and for prenatal clients.
To confirm acute rubella infection, paired serum specimens are required. The first specimen should be collected 1-3 days after onset of illness; the convalescent, one to two weeks later. For immune status testing submit a single specimen. See general instruction for collection, packaging and submission of serologic specimens to OSPHL - use form 42.
Reporting
A computer generated report is sent to the submitting provider/facility.
Interpretation of Results
Immune status - result is reported as:
1. Nonimmune: Assay result less than 10 IU/ml - suggests lack of immunity to rubella.
2. Immune: Assay result of 10 IU/ml - probable immunity to rubella.
