2001-2003 Program Report
Make Oregon Healthier: Saving Lives and Saving Dollars

Program Results

Oregon?s Tobacco Prevention and Education Program is evaluated by measuring changes in tobacco use from 1996 ? the year prior to implementation of the Program ? to the present. Oregon?s results are then compared to the nation to assess the Program?s effectiveness. During these six years, there has been a dramatic reduction in tobacco use in Oregon.

Fewer adults, pregnant women, and youth are smoking. Use of smokeless tobacco is also down substantially. And, far fewer Oregonians are exposed to secondhand smoke in the workplace and in the home.

Saving Lives and Saving Dollars

For each year Oregon maintains the tobacco use reductions already achieved, 1,800 lives and $540 million is saved in Oregon?s future.
