Summary of Oregon's Tobacco Prevention Program

Oregon's Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (TPEP) was launched in 1997 with a clear and simple mandate — to reduce tobacco-related illness and death. Since its inception, TPEP has been a comprehensive program, addressing the issues of tobacco use and Oregon's anti-tobacco efforts are saving lives and money: Read the program reports and tobacco facts.

These efforts reflect the CDC recommendations for effective tobacco-control programs. CDC Best Practices.

Program Components
Oregon's Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (TPEP) works. From 1996, when TPEP began, through 2006, per capita cigarette consumption decreased 41%. This means that in 2006, 2.6 billion fewer cigarettes were sold than in 1996. Twenty-two percent fewer adults smoked in 2006 than in 1996 and smoking has declined 59% among Oregon's 8th graders.

TPEP works because it is based on evidence and best practices. TPEP is a comprehensive program - the problem of tobacco use is tackled on many different levels. All program components are important and are necessary for effective tobacco control. TPEP program components include:
  • Local community-based coalitions
  • Tribal programs
  • Specific Population Networks
  • School programs
  • Public awareness and education campaign
  • Program evaluation and statewide coordination & leadership
  • Oregon Tobacco Quit Line
