TB Data
Incidence of TB has been declining over the past decade. In 2007, 94 cases of TB disease were verified in Oregon, for a rate of 2.5 cases per 100,000 residents. This is a slight increase from last year, where only 81 TB cases were reported.
TB incidence is higher in foreign-born than US born residents; in Oregon, 75% of the TB cases from 2007 were among foreign-born residents.
Inadequate treatment of TB can lead to drug resistant TB; therefore, directly observed therapy (DOT) is the standard of care in Oregon. In 2007, 8.9% of isolates tested were resistant to INH (the primary first-line TB drug) however, only two cases of multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB (that is, resistant to two or more first-line TB drugs) were reported in Oregon.
