The Oregon legislature passed a law in June 2007 making the Oregon Smokefree Workplace Law even stronger.

Beginning in January 2009, the number of indoor workplaces required to be smokefree will expand to include:

  • Bars

  • Bar areas of restaurants

  • Bingo halls

  • Bowling alleys

  • Employee break rooms

  • At least 75% of hotel/motel sleeping rooms

The new law will also prohibit smoking within 10 feet of entrances, exits, windows that open and ventilation intakes of workplaces or public places.

Exceptions to the law include:
  • Smoking of non-commercial tobacco for American Indian ceremonial purposes

  • Smoking cigars in approved cigar bars

  • Smoking in approved smoke shops

  • An important change from the current law is the repeal of preemption, which means that local jurisdictions are again allowed to pass stronger laws than the state law.

The new restrictions go into effect on January 1, 2009.
