NW Eugene neighborhoods: River Road, Trainsong, and Bethel

Eugene, Lane County
There are several industrial sites located in Northwest Eugene. Community leaders in Trainsong, River Road, and Bethel Neighborhoods expressed concern to EHAP regarding cancer rates in their neighborhoods, while EHAP was assessing the health impact of the JH Baxter Plant. Although currently there is no recognized association between AML and brain cancer and the contaminants emitted from JH Baxter, EHAP agreed to address the community's concerns and conduct the investigation.

To address community concerns about cancer, EHAP has been working with the Oregon State Cancer Registry (OSCaR) to obtain and analyze the number of AML, brain cancer as well as nasal and lung cancer cases in River Road, Trainsong, and Bethel neighborhoods.  Residents have expressed concern regarding what they see as high rates of brain cancer and AML in their neighborhoods.  EHAP included nasal and lung cancer in this review since these two types of cancers are possibly linked to contaminants released from the JH Baxter plant.
