Health Care Interpreters: Standards & Policies

As the number of persons with limited English proficiency grows, so will the number of LEP patients treated in health care organizations. To best serve these patients, procedures and plans that ensure equal access to health care services need to be established.

In order to ensure equal access to and quality of health care for diverse populations, health care providers should work to maintain an environment where there is an organization-wide commitment to develop and staff competent interpreter services. Central to the success of this commitment is the development of comprehensive, written policies on language access that can guide a coordinator of interpreter services in fulfilling her/his responsibilities.

These policies should be easily accessible and widely disseminated among employees and patients. Policies and procedures should outline periodic training of staff including awareness of LEP policies and procedures including how to work effectively with in-person and telephone interpreters and to understand the dynamics of interpretation between patients, providers and interpreters.
