The QPR Institute's Suicide Prevention Training Programs

The QPR Institute offers comprehensive suicide prevention training programs, educational and clinical materials for the general public, professionals, and institutions. They have developed a distance learning instructional methodology for the delivery of suicide prevention training programs to rural America and large institutions. These programs are a blend of video or CD-ROM foundation lectures, coupled with in-class and interactive online tutorials. Visit QPR online for more info: QPR Institute.

Training Products and Service Descriptions

  • QPR Citizen Gatekeeper Training (Suicide Intervention Training) and Instructor Certification Course. Community gatekeepers are taught how to recognize suicidal communications and warning signs, and what three steps can be taken to help prevent a suicidal act (Question, Persuade, Refer). This basic awareness and action step program is taught in as little as one hour. Instructors are certified for 3-years by QPR Institute staff in an intense, one-day training format or through a self-study program. To date, more than 150,000 US citizens have been trained in QPR. The curricula are available in Spanish and in a youth version.

  • QPR Suicide Triage Training and Instructor Training Course. For a citizen action program to work effectively, some citizens need more than one hour of training. Once suicide risk has been detected, initial assessment and referral skills are needed by those in frequent or strategic contact with at-risk populations, especially where that person has some duty to ensure the safety of the suicidal person. The QPR Suicide Triage training program is a flexible 4-8 hour knowledge and skills-based program designed for those in the "front lines." This course was developed for all first responders, including 911 call takers, EMTs, law enforcement personnel, elder care workers, nursing home staff, university resident advisors, mentors, nurses, chaplains, EAP professionals, attorneys, corrections, probation and parole officers, crisis line workers, domestic violence advocates and many others. QPR Suicide Triage training is available in the following formats: onsite, train-the-trainer, instructor self-study and online.

  • Professional training (The QPRT Suicide Risk Management Inventory). Once at-risk persons are identified, initially assessed and referred, healthcare, chemical dependency and mental health professionals must be knowledgeable and skilled in the assessment and management of suicide risk. These professionals also need to understand the nature of suicide and be skilled in postvention services in the event of a consumer death by suicide. To this end, the QPR Institute has written, published, tested and trained more than 15,000 mental health and chemical dependency professionals in how to use the QPRT Suicide Risk Management Inventory, an award-wining "best practices" risk assessment protocol and documentation system. The course comes with user's manuals and protocols for inpatient and outpatient providers in Adult, Pediatric and Hospital versions.

  • Primary Medical Care Training. The QPRT Suicide Risk Management Inventory training program has been tested and refined for medical providers, including physicians, nurses, ARNPs, and PAs. This course is available onsite and taught by a physician, or through a self-guided CD-ROM tutorial.
