Training

Oregon has three levels of EMT certification: EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic. Each level of certification is obtained through successful completion of a course or program geared to the specific certification level. More information can be found by looking at Educational Requirements.

Currently, there are nineteen schools throughout Oregon providing EMS education. Of these nineteen schools, eight offer paramedic education. You can see the schools that are providing EMS education by looking at School Information. The school information page will also tell you what level of EMS education is provided by each school as well as the name and phone number of a contact person who can assist you with specific information about the school.

Oregon EMS frequently receives inquiries from EMTs in other states looking to relocate to Oregon. These individuals may be able to obtain Oregon EMT certification through Reciprocity.

Certification & Recertification

Upon successful completion of an EMT course, the student submits an application to test to the Oregon Health Services. More information on the testing process and associated fees can be found by looking at Testing and Certification.

Once EMT certification is obtained, you must recertify every two years. All EMT certificates expire on June 30 of the odd years. To see information on continuing education, fees and the recertification process, look at Recertification.

Forms

The EMT is responsible for notifying Health Services (OAR 333-265-0160) within 30 days of any reportable action. Reportable actions such as a change of name, address, EMS affiliation, arrests, change in medical status, or restriction in scope of practice, needs to be reported on an E-4 form.

If your name has changed or you need a replacement certificate you may apply for a Duplicate Certificate.

Scope of Practice

The Board of Medical Examiners determines the scope of practice for Oregon's EMTs and First Responders. Look at Scope of Practice to review the skills authorized for each level of certification.
