It concentrates funding efforts in three areas: assuring access to basic health services to all Americans at reasonable cost; improving the way services are organized and provided for people with chronic health conditions; and reducing the harm caused by substance abuse - tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

- The Pew Charitable Trusts focuses on expanding service availability to populations in underserved areas, especially rural areas. It supports the work of nonprofit organizations in the fields of health and human services; substance abuse services; health associations; aging; Native Americans; disabled; economically disadvantaged; women; and homeless.

Their primary focus is on undergraduate education with support also for professional study at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
