The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is devoted exclusively to health and health care. It concentrates funding efforts in three areas: assuring access to basic health services to all Americans at reasonable cost; improving the way services are organized and provided for people with chronic health conditions; and reducing the harm caused by substance abuse - tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

The Pew Charitable Trusts focuses on expanding service availability to populations in underserved areas, especially rural areas. It supports the work of nonprofit organizations in the fields of health and human services; substance abuse services; health associations; aging; Native Americans; disabled; economically disadvantaged; women; and homeless.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation focuses on helping people help themselves through the practical application of knowledge and resources to improve their quality of life and that of future generations. It targets its grants toward these specific areas: health; food systems and rural development; youth and education; and philanthropy and voluntarism.

The Kresge Foundation grants are made on a challenge basis for the following six areas: social services, public policy, science and environment, arts and humanities, health and long-term care, and higher education. Hartford Foundation addresses the unique health needs of the elderly, including long-term care, the use of medication in chronic health problems, increasing the nation's geriatric research and training capability, and improving the integration of financing and care delivery for comprehensive geriatric services.

The Ford Foundation focuses on strengthening democratic values, reducing poverty and injustice, promoting international cooperation, and advancing human achievement. Their interests include human services, family planning, rural development, substance abuse services, and youth development services.

The Hearst Foundation, Inc. assists institutions to provide access and opportunity to underrepresented, low-income, and minority populations. Their primary focus is on undergraduate education with support also for professional study at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Funding is also given in areas of health, social service, and rural development.
