Drinking Water Protection and Land Use Planning in Lane County – November 14, 2006

Carmichael Conference Room, Lane County Juvenile Justice Center-John Serbu Campus, 2727 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Eugene, Oregon

Sponsored by Lane County Planning Department, the Department of Environmental Quality and the DHS Drinking Water Program

Purpose:  To provide information to Lane County communities regarding using land use planning practices to achieve drinking water protection.  In addition to giving communities the means of adding a measure of certainty to the long-term viability of the community, we want to show how the incorporation of land use tools into drinking water protection also provides answers to many questions that face communities today, such as:

  • How do we accommodate new growth and zone new areas brought inside the UGB/City limits;
  • How do minimize the risk of having to install expensive treatment;
  • How do we estimate the potential impact of a given activity or facility on our drinking water;
  • What if someone proposes to place a high-risk facility right next to our well (who do we contact with our concerns and what is the appeal process;
  • How do we identify and prioritize emergency response measures;
  • How do we maintain a positive public relations campaign in the community... etc...

Target Audience:  City Planners, City Administrators, County Commissioners, Local Government Officials, Consultants, Public Water System Operators, Board Members, etc.
