Standardized Developmental Screening

The Oregon ABCD Steering Committee and its clinician panel developed recommendations to improve screening practices among pediatric primary care providers. The ABCD committee reviewed recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatricsnational experts, and nine previous ABCD pilot states. The goal of these recommendations is to increase identification of children with developmental, behavioral, and/or psychosocial delays promptly in early childhood so they will be targeted for early intervention or further evaluation.

To avoid confusion and help foster implementation in primary care, Oregon's ABCD Steering Committee established the following criteria and recommendations for the available parent-reported tools.

General developmental:

Social-emotional:

  • Ages and Stages Questionnaire plus Social-Emotional (ASQ-SE)

Autism:

  • Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT)

Post-partum mood disorder and family psychosocial:

  • Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
  • Beck Inventory II
  • Family Psychosocial Screen
  • Parent Point of Care Screening Tool
