Gold Ribbon Campaign for Breastfeeding Mothers

Project description
Goal of the campaign
Options for how organizations can participate
Making the campaign a community effort
What can DHS, Office of Family Health provide?

In 2002 the Department of Human Services (DHS), Office of Family Health initiated a GOLD RIBBON CAMPAIGN FOR BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS. Community groups and organizations are encouraged to participate on an ongoing basis.

The Office of Family Health will provide most of the materials for the campaign. And, hard copies of the materials will also be provided so that community breastfeeding supporters can add their own logo and print their own materials if desired.

Project Description
Breastfeeding advocate groups and health organizations provide an information card, with or without a length of metallic gold ribbon, to breastfeeding women or pregnant women who are planning to breastfeed. The cards encourage mothers to tie a gold ribbon onto something visible like their diaper bag, purse, baby stroller or backpack. The gold ribbon symbolizes that:

Human milk is the Gold Standard for Infant Feeding.
Breastfeeding is the normal and natural way to give babies nutritional, immunological, and emotional nurturing. No artificial baby milk (formula) or other baby food can give the same level of nutrition, disease protection and improved cognitive development. Breastfeeding . . . is the Gold Standard against which any other feeding product must be compared.

Goal of the Campaign
The goal is to increase the number of women who are able to breastfeed for at least one year as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics Position Paper on Breastfeeding.

As women begin seeing other women with gold ribbons they will feel proud to belong to a breastfeeding community. We hope they will:
  • Realize that most mothers breastfeed, and it's the norm.
  • Show their ribbon to other breastfeeding moms and smile or give a " thumbs up."
  • Start a conversation with another breastfeeding mom to offer encouragement or share their experiences.

Options for How Organizations Can Participate
  1. Provide a gold ribbon to women and give them the information card explaining the project and the rationale for the gold ribbon; or
  2. Provide the information cards and encourage women to obtain their own gold ribbon; or
  3. Distribute the information cards and/or ribbons in discharge packets, at childbirth education classes or in other ways appropriate for your organization.

Making the Campaign a Community Effort
Please consider contacting your community partners and asking them to participate in the campaign also. The gold ribbon campaign will be more effective as a community effort. Examples of potential community partners include: hospital maternity wards, hospital lactation departments, La Leche League Chapters, community breastfeeding task forces, childbirth education classes, WIC agencies, Health Departments, and other health organizations. Thank you for joining us in supporting nursing mothers in Oregon.

DHS, Office of Family Health can provide the following:
  • Information on where to order the gold ribbon in quantity.
  • English and Spanish versions of an 8 1/2 by 11 inch poster announcing the campaign. These can be ordered in quantity.
  • English and Spanish information cards in quantity to give to mothers with or without a ribbon. The cards give mothers the message "tie a gold ribbon on your bag."
  • Camera-ready hard copies of both the information cards and the poster. There is a space next to the DHS logo where you can add your own logo before printing.

To order materials for the Gold Ribbon Campaign for Breastfeeding Mothers, download a print version of the order form (pdf) (943KB) and FAX it to 503-731-4083. For your convenience, you may also use the on-line order form. Also feel free to use or modify any of these materials or any of the information in them to meet your needs.
