Asthma Care in Oregon - What Have We Learned?
An Inside Look at Data from 2001-2005
How Many People Have Asthma?
During the past 25 years, the percentage of adults with asthma (referred to as asthma prevalence) in the United States has risen from 3% in 1980 to 8% in 2005 (see Figure 1 below for a snapshot from 2001-2005).
In Oregon, the trend is no different, with an increase in adult asthma prevalence from 7.3% in 1996 to 9.9% in 2005. Combined with an estimated asthma prevalence of 8.4% among Oregon children age <18 years, these findings mean that more than 345,000 people in Oregon have asthma.
