The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issues a smog advisory when state meteorologists predict that hot, windless weather conditions may result in elevated smog levels in the Portland-Vancouver area. (Clean Air Action Day Advisory). Air quality information is also given for other cities in Oregon.
DEQ also issues a hot weather health watch when the weather forecast is for hot temperatures and light winds that could cause moderate smog levels that may cause smog-sensitive individuals to experience breathing problems. Smog can exacerbate asthma and trigger asthma attacks. If you have heart or lung disease, follow your health care provider's advice on how to care for your condition on days when smog is increasing.
To assist you in taking appropriate precautions, learn more about current air quality in different parts of Oregon, sign up with DEQ to receive an e-mail advisory the day before a smog advisory or hot weather health watch. To sign up, visit the Oregon DEQ website.
