The Eight Components of Coordinated School Health

Coordinated School Health

   Model: Eight Components

Supporting kids' achievements and addressing health issues such as hunger, illness, depression, harassment, injuries, substance use, unintended pregnancy, disordered eating and obesity can greatly improve their ability to learn. Schools, in partnership with communities, can work together to shape the health, education, and social well-being of young people.

The American School Health Association describes CSHP as a broad spectrum of activities and services which take place in schools and their surrounding communities that enable children and youth to enhance their health, develop to their fullest potential and establish productive lives.

The CDC Eight Component Model of School Health Programs consists of the following eight interactive components:

Health Education
A K-12 developmentally-appropriate curriculum that addresses a variety of topics, develops health knowledge, attitudes, and skills, and is taught by trained physical educators.

Physical Education
A K-12 planned program that develops basic movement skills, enhances physical fitness, promotes lifelong physical activity, and is taught by trained physical educators.

Health Services
School-based or school-linked access to preventive services, referrals, emergency care, and chronic disease management for all students.

Nutrition Services
School-based programs that assure all students affordable and nutrition meals, deliver nutrition education in partnership with the classroom teacher, and are provided by trained personnel.

Health Promotion for Staff
School-based or school-linked programs that promote the physical and mental health of staff and discuss the importance of positive role modeling for students.

School Counseling, Psychological & Social Services
School-based or school-linked services that focus on the cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral needs of individuals, groups, and families.

Healthy School Environment
A healthy and supportive school climate and safe and aesthetically pleasing physical environment.
